BEAUMONT, Texas — Last month, former Lumberton standout Mason Sikes announced he would forgo his senior season at Lamar and enter the transfer portal to search for a new home. It wasn't long thereafter that Boise State came calling.
"My dream was to always play at the Division One Single A level," Sikes said. "Playing in front of thousands each weekend and being a grad transfer opened up an opportunity for myself."
Sikes would later post a message on Twitter announcing his commitment to the Broncos.
"Boise State had everything I was looking for," Sikes said. "They have a great culture about themselves. Just all the way top to bottom it's a great organization."
Though Sikes was unable to visit campus due to COVID-19, it was his conversations with Tight End coach Kent Riddle that made his decision to join the Broncos that much easier.
"He's upfront, he's honest and he cares about his players," Sikes said. "He really wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting myself into and I knew the standards that they placed."
Sikes will join a tight end group that consists of top returner John Bates and incoming freshmen Austin Bolt and Russel Corrigan. And though it may seem crowded, Sikes knows he has a great shot at contributing immediately and looks forward to helping the Broncos win another Mountain West championship.
"Coach Riddle and I have talked a lot about something they are looking for and the things they are excited to do with the addition of me," Sikes said. "They play in the Mountain West championship a lot and just to have my name be apart of that and get a win for the Broncos would be awesome."
