NEDERLAND, Texas — For generations, the rivalry between the Port-Neches Groves Indians and the Nederland Bulldogs has been a staple in the Southeast Texas high school football scene. Now the Mid-County Madness grudge match is drawing national acclaim.
In the Sports Illustrated article "High school football rivalries in America: Vote for the best", Nederland vs. PNG won first place among other high school football juggernauts across the nation, after a week of fan voting.
Mid-County Madness won by a landslide with with 9,315 total votes or 72.59%.
The article mentions the long storied rivalry that dates back to 1925 as well as the two teams distinct connection of each once having employed legendary coach Bum Phillips. The winning team each year taking home the "Bum Phillips Bowl" trophy after the game.
PNG holds the advantage over Nederland with a 53-39-7 record all time against them. Including a convincing 41-16 win over the Bulldogs last year on their way to win the school's fourth state championship.
However, While the Nederland Bulldogs may have struggled in 2023 they have attacked their 2024 schedule with a vengeance. Currently 3-0 in district and tied with PNG for first place, with a high powered offense that can compete with anyone.
While the defending state champion Indians are continuing to flex their dominance with a perfect 6-0 record this year.
The two teams are once again destined to clash October 25 in what is shaping up to be a must watch football game, with a rivalry deserving of its now national recognition.
