Port Neches-Groves High School pushes past South Oak Cliff 20-17 to become 5A Div 2 state champs

This year the Indians found redemption following last year's loss to the Golden Bears.

ARLINGTON, Texas — For the first time since 1975 the Texas State football championship is coming home to Port Neches-Groves High School.

The Indians faced off in a rematch of last year's state championship game when they took on the South Oak Cliff Golden Bears. Last year PNG came up short, losing 34-24.

This year they found redemption in Saturday's 20-17 win at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The game started with a strong drive from PNG that brought them yards from the end zone, but a stout South Oak Cliff defense, dubbed the "Death Row Defense," was able to keep the Indians out of the end zone.

The Indians would rely on the leg of kicker Giovanni Ocegura to give them the three-point lead at the beginning of the game

The Golden Bears responded on their first drive moving down the field relying heavily on their running game. Golden Bears star running back Danny Green was able to stretch across the goal line to put South Oak Cliff up 7-3.

PNG made it to the red zone on their next drive but again would have to rely on the leg of Ocegura to get the job done.

A turnover in the second quarter allowed PNG to put another three points on the board after not being able to capitalize on a good field position. South Oak Cliff returned the favor on their next drive giving them a 10-9 lead going into halftime.

The second-half was all about PNG 's defense after they stopped South Oak Cliff on their very first drive of the second-half.

Unfortunately Danny Green's 44-yard touchdown broke the game open for the Golden Bears giving them a 17-9 lead in the third quarter.

Once again the Indians were unable to capitalize on a red zone visit that resulted in in yet another field goal putting the score at 17-12 in favor of SOC.

The Indians then took a chance with a risky onside kick and were able to get the ball back.

This time they drove down the field and found the end zone after Shea Adams kept the ball and rushed it in to give the Indians an 18-17 lead.

A two point conversion on a pitch to Isaiah Nguyen would seal the 20-17 win for the Indians.

On the next drive the PNG "D" stood tall on the back of multiple sacks by Andres Fuentes to guarantee a victory.
