Newton ISD celebrates first alumnus in College Football Playoff National Championship game

Josh Foster graduated from Newton High School in 2019 as a two-time State Champion and went on to play football for TCU.

NEWTON, Texas — Ahead of the College Football Playoff National Championship game, the Newton Eagles made it clear who they were cheering for.

Newton ISD declared today, Monday, Jan. 9, Josh Foster Day to support the hometown Horned Frog.

The whole community joined in on the celebration and dawned TCU purple today. Students and staff also made signs to show No.15 they were behind him.

Foster graduated from Newton High School in 2019. He played quarterback, running back and defensive back as an Eagle. He also was apart of Coach W.T. Johnston's teams that won back-to-back State Championships in 2017 and 2018.

Newton's athletic director Drew Johnston says Newton is overwhelmed with pride for Josh Foster.

"We're just really proud of Josh," Coach Johnston said." We've had a lot of guys go off and play an be successful, but we've never had anybody make it to the National Championship, so its a pretty cool deal."

"I talked to the team just about Josh and the kid he was," Johnston said. "He was a great football player. He was our quarterback in back-to-back State Championship wins, but he was an even better human. He was a great kid, great role model. That's what I talked to our guys about. If you want to strive to be someone, he's a good one to want to be like."

Regardless of the game result, Coach Johnston says Foster is always a champion in his hometown because purple reigns, as always, in Newton, Tx.
