Orange fencing club helps elevate young athletes to higher potential

Father Sinclair Oubre, who is the pastor of the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Orange, helped create a fencing club in Orange.

ORANGE, Texas — Golden opportunities can arise from the Golden Triangle all the time.

This one in particular gives the choice to those eager to escape from the humdrum that life offers through the world of fencing.

Father Sinclair Oubre, who is the pastor of the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Orange, helped create a fencing club in Orange as the surrounding programs begin to dissipate in the 1980s.

"Looking for fencing, seeing it done and the tradition of dueling really captures my imagination," Father Oubre said about fencing.

The Spindletop Cavaliers was founded in 1985 with the help of Father Oubre, and it's an opportunity for those who choose to involve themselves in fencing to get the potential for Olympic training down the road.

"It's a little bit like watching some of the other martial arts that have taken place," said Father Oubre. "You've got the basic judo club, or karate club and then you get to international tournament."

The basics can be taught in Orange but to take things further, Father Oubre did say there are "Olympic quality coaches" in Houston for them to better their careers.

Unlike the other athletic events across the country, Fencing takes finesse and more precise movements.

"It looks so easy, but the maneuvering and avoiding [the attack] that takes place in the sport is very careful. You have to have good peripheral vision, good speed, discipline and practice," Father Oubre said in talking about the technique of the art.

No need to go hours away to find a unique sporting experience and can learn an Olympic event on your own right here with the Spindletop Cavaliers in Orange.
