BEAUMONT, Texas — Two-time defending State Champion Beaumont United started off the playoffs with a bang, hammering Pasadena Dobie, 82-47.
The Timberwolves overcame early foul trouble thanks the hot hand of junior guard Kayde Dotson.
Coach David Green has come to expect that.
"Well that's what Kayde's all about. He done put in a lot of time leading his team from the point guard spot. Hit some big shots when dobie cut the lead down. Those four threes he hit down the stretch, it broke their back. And I was so proud of him because that's what he does every day in the gym working on his craft. So it's not a surprise to me what Kayde's doing right now."
Dotson says it's all about a team effort.
"We believe we got about five to six players that can really go get it, so when somebody is in foul trouble or not having a good game or whatever, we still believe we got the talent to and whatever it takes to get the win."
Dotson's game has evolved since wearing the maroon and gold for the first time.
"Last year was my first year really playing point guard, so I've been working on not turning the ball over. More assists than turnovers. Finding ways to get my players more shots and get myself shots as well."
Coach Green says he has complete faith in Dotson.
"He has confidence. Matter of fact I've gotten to the point now when we start the games off I allow him to start off calling the plays and then I just feel my way in and gradually finish the game off in like the third, fourth quarter. But Kayde starts it off because he's so sharp. He understands what Beaumont United needs at that particular time."
And back to that confidence, when Dotson shoots, he expects to score.
"I mean I always have that feeling. We put a lot of work in. Me and the team, so anytime I shoot the ball I expect it to go in."
Green loves the confidence.
"I think it's great. Cause I feel like that all the time when he shoots. I've seen the time he put in and the shots that he makes every day that he practice. So when he miss I'm kind of disappointed because I done go spoiled now, cause when he lets it go it's almost automatic."
