BEAUMONT, Texas — As one of the most historic seasons ever for the Lamar Cardinals baseball squad came to a close, Big Red waved goodbye and wished Coach Sean Snedeker farewell on his travels to Baylor.
Welcoming a new age of pitching for the Cards, Head Coach Will Davis brought in Sean McGrath to fill the cleats left behind.
"I was really excited," McGrath said when asked about the opportunity.
"I couldn't be more excited to work behind Will [Davis], Scott [Hatten], Tod [McDowell] and get to work with the guys," said McGrath.
Growing up in New Jersey, McGrath began his coaching career with Iona University for three years before moving to Boston to coach at the University of Massachusetts Lowell for two years.
McGrath also spent three years in pro baseball within the Seattle Mariners system in the coaching staff with the Arkansas Travelers.
As for the team he is inheriting, the Lamar Cardinals, they had a season worth going in the record books.
Big Red tracked down one of the top pitching staffs in the nation with a top five earned run average last season.
When asked about how McGrath perceived the 2024 season for the Cards he said, "Sned' [Sean Snedeker] did a really wonderful job looking over data, film, did a really phenomenal job of getting these guys to dominate the strike zone."
"Really just trying to give my all each and every day to these guys and to Will Davis each and every day, to make these guys the best versions of themselves," McGrath said in talking about trying to advance what has already been done at Lamar.
We still got football on the horizon before the beginning of the 2025 season at Vincent-Beck Stadium, but a great hire for the Cards as another great year is anticipated for Lamar next season.
Good luck and congrats to Coach Sean McGrath!
