A spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Thursday identified an inmate who died at the Stiles Unit on Wednesday.

The spokesperson said Anthony Lewis, 49, was found on the floor of his cell at the Stiles Unit in Beaumont on Wednesday. He had what appeared to be a self-inflicted laceration to the right side of his neck.

Lewis was rushed to the infirmary where he was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation by the Office of Inspector General.

Offender Lewis began serving a 60-year sentence in TDCJ on October 8, 2013 for Murder and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon in Rockwall County.

According to ABC affiliate WFAA, Lewis was a former Hunt County Constable. On February 16, 2013 he called 911 and admitted he had just shot two people.

Lewis also warned "he was armed and would not be taken alive by law enforcement."

Authorities said Lewis refused to drop his weapon when they confronted him following a three-county pursuit.

Officers shot and wounded Lewis, but he was ultimately taken alive.

Police said Lewis opened fire on his ex-girlfriend, Jessica Aguilar, and her companion, Francisco Delacruz, outside The Harbor shopping center in Rockwall.

Aguilar later died, and Delacruz survived.

Family members said Aguilar had become increasingly worried that "something was going to happen." They said she had ended her two-year relationship with Lewis, but that he was still pursuing her.
