'Howdy folks' | Big Tex installed for the 2024 State Fair of Texas, new Cotton Bowl upgrades underway

The annual fair runs from Friday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Oct. 20.

DALLAS, Texas — There’s something about watching Big Tex “wake up” that is special to Texans.

Many gathered around to see the iconic statue come to life a week ahead of the State Fair of Texas.

Two of Big Tex’s fans were there bright and early to witness this moment.

Jeffry Carter and his younger brother Nash both dressed up as Big Tex. Their mother Megan said she loves sharing this moment with her sons.

“It's cool to see it through your kid's eyes as like an idol, so the experience coming out here is really special,” she said.

The fair will have several new attractions including Billy Kidd show, Bryan Berg the Card Stacker, and a brand-new drone show.

The historic Cotton Bowl is also preparing for thousands of college football fans during the fair for two major matchups: Prairie View A&M vs Grambling State and Texas vs Oklahoma.

The stadium is in the middle of a two-year renovation project worth $140 million. John Hutchings is one of the designers on the project. He said the enhancement will focus on the visitor experience, adding 14 new escalators and the construction of new multi-story entries to welcome visitors at two west entrance gates.

“This area hasn't been renovated in this area since 1948,” said Hutchings.

The press box is fully renovated with new lounge space and suites.

Once the fair wraps up this year, Hutchings said crews will be able to finish working on the concourse. That part of the project is expected to be done in time for the fair next year.

The fair kicks off on Friday, Sept. 27, and ends on Sunday, Oct. 20.
