Newton man gets 8 years in prison for shooting on same day as 2023 after-prom shooting, another shooting four months prior

He still faces charges in the after-prom party as well as a separate shooting in Newton County.

JASPER, Texas — One of several suspects in the April 2023 after-prom party shooting in Jasper has pleaded guilty to a charge in a shooting that happened the same day as the after-prom shooting and another shooting that happened about four months earlier.

Cameron Hartsfield, 20, of Newton, pleaded guilty on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, to a charge of deadly conduct in a separate shooting that happened the same day and about five miles away from the after-prom shooting. He also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in a December 2022 shooting on Shady Ln in Jasper.

He was sentenced to eight years in prison for the April 2023 deadly conduct charge and five years in prison in the December 2022 shooting. Because the sentences are set to run concurrently, he will face a total of eight years.

Hartsfield still faces charges in the April 2023 shooting at the after-prom party as well as a shooting in Newton County.

Three other suspects in the after-prom shooting, Cheston Hartsfield, Tracy Hickman and Tyler Porter, all of Newton, are set for a status hearing on Nov. 5, 2024.

The after-prom party shooting happened on April 23, 2023 outside the city limits of Jasper on County Road 263 in Jasper County.

While at first it was believed that nine teenagers were injured, officials later confirmed there were 11 teenage victims according to file stories.

Eight of the victims were taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital by personal vehicles, and some were transferred to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for further treatment, according to a file story.

Two of the victims went to the hospital the day after the shooting took place. Ten of the victims were injured by gunfire, and one was injured while fleeing.

All of their wounds were not life-threatening.

Investigators believe a dispute between rival groups may have led to the shooting.

A white sedan seen at the after-prom party shooting was believed to be involved in a shootout in the city of Jasper about five miles away from the after-prom shooting the sheriff's office told 12News at the time.

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
