Robert “Bob” Bowers dies at 91

Bob Bowers was the namesake for Port Arthur's Civic Center and a beloved longtime city employee.

ORANGE, Texas — Bob Bowers, the namesake for Port Arthur's Civic Center and a beloved longtime city employee, died Friday night at 91, his family said.

"Many years ago, because of Alzheimer’s, the world began to lose a wonderful, generous, servant-hearted man, as he slowly slipped away from us," his niece Sharon Milner Honza said in a Facebook post. "He's been missed for many years as the patriarch of our family."

Bowers was born April 10, 1928. He died June 7 surrounded by family members listening to his favorite music with him, Honza said.

Bowers was known for problem solving, being a voice of reason and giving sound advice, according to his family.

"He gave generously, of his time, talents and finances," Honza said.

Honza also shared a story of a time she was being hospitalized during a difficult pregnancy as she and her husband bought a used car from her uncle. She said her uncle mailed back the check for the car and wrote "paid in full" across it because he knew they would have medical bills.

"My Uncle Bob was the most Christ-like man I’ve ever known," Honza said. "I can only be thankful he was there in my life to be such an example."
