What you should know before heading to the polls in November

Updating your address before the deadline is the most important thing to do.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Texas — People in Southeast Texas say they're receiving letters that state they've been part of a 'voter purge.'

A voter purge is a process of cleaning up voter rolls, by deleting names from registration lists. The letters are being sent by mail and some of people may not have even noticed them.

The deadline to register to vote in the November elections is October 7. You can confirm if you are registered to vote on votetexas.gov.

Jefferson County Clerk Roxanne Acosta-Hellberg says voters can take advantage of early voting to help minimize your wait time. Early voting begins October 21. There will be 31 locations in Jefferson County.

There are a few things to remember before going to the polls. Make sure not to wear political attire and bring your ID. Updating your address before the deadline is the most important thing to do.

Democratic delegate Beverly Hatcher says exercising your right to vote is crucial. She plans to represent Southeast Texas next week at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago.

"I'm gonna do all I can and then some to represent you the best that I can on behalf of what the country is about to see for themselves," Hatcher said.

Hatcher says this will be her fourth convention. The DNC begins Monday, August 19 and ends on Thursday, August 22.
