Southeast Texas voters reject Beaumont council term limits, Silsbee ISD bond, approve 2 ESDs, Orangefield ISD bond

Voters in Southeast Texas had a few other decisions to make in addition to the Texas Constitutional Amendment propositions.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Southeast Texas voters joined the rest of Texas to decide on 14 propositions to amend the Texas constitution but also made a handful of important decisions at home.

In Jefferson and Hardin County two new emergency services districts were approved and voters also approved tax increases for several ESDs.

Emergency Service District 5 will be created to serve Hamshire residents while ESD 7 will be created to serve residents in the Thicket-Votaw area of Hardin County.

In Beaumont voters rejected setting term limits for city council members with 54% of voters saying no but they did easily approve several other changes to the city charter.

Had the proposition passed, it would have extended terms from two to four years and added a three-term limit allowing members to serve a total of 12 years in office.

In Hardin County and Orange County one school bond passed and another failed.

Silsbee Independent School District's $84.5 million bond issue failed with 63% of voters saying no.

Voters in the Orangefield  Independent School District approved that district's $42.9 million bond with 69% of the vote.

Nearly all of the races in Southeast Texas were propositions and bonds but voters did actually choose candidates in five contested races in Jefferson and Tyler County.

Voters in Port Neches chose Jim Wallace for place three on the city council. He beat Mike Beaty by getting 1,110 votes or 59% of the vote.

Port Neches-Groves Independent School District voters chose two school board members with Brenda Duhon and Jake Lefort winning ech of their races.

Duhon won the place six spot on the school board with 2,042 votes, or 68% of the vote.

Lefort won the race for place seven on the board with 2,160 vote, or 78% of the vote.

A few miles north in Tyler County, Ivanhoe residents chose three new council members including Justin Gregory, who got 30% of the vote, David Herrington with 29% and Joe D. McWhorter, who got 26% of the vote.

Woodville voters chose Paula M. Jones as their place three alderman. She got 55% of the vote in a three-way race.
