BEAUMONT, Texas — The race for State Representative of District 21 is coming down to the wire, and on March 5 voters will decide, once and for all, which candidate will take the seat.
While this is one of the hottest races on the primary ballot, incumbent Dade Phelan is feeling confident that he will win a fifth term.
"It's not easy to cut tuition 50% when you're from Southeast Texas, that's what the big cities get and now we're getting it," Phelan told 12News, "House District 21 has more transportation funding projects than any other house district out of 150 in the State of Texas. That's what experience gets you and that's what hard work gets you, and quite frankly when you're the Speaker of the House it's a lot easier to make those things happen."
Kirbyville native Alicia Davis has built her platform around grassroots politics and the pursuit to improve the quality of life for Texans.
"Right now we have the best government money can buy, that's a fact. We don't have a government that works for the people or even by the people anymore, I want to change that. I'm just regular folks but I felt like nobody was standing up for the regular folks. There sure isn't anybody legislating for the tax payer," Davis told 12News.
Davis says that she has spent the last 5 years fighting to eliminate property taxes.
Meanwhile David Covey, who has been indorsed by both Governor Greg Abbott and Donald Trump, has been criticized by Dade Phelan about his job, and now wants to set the record straight.
"I am not an attorney, I've never claimed to be an attorney. I do have a law degree but that doesn't make me an attorney. I'm running as a everyday person here. I work at the plants in Southeast Texas. I'm a normal person and I'm going to continue to work the best I can to represent my community," Covey said.
Covey says his main focus is on border security and election integrity.
With three candidates still in the race and each making a push, March 5 is shaping up to be quite the finish.
