BEAUMONT, Texas — Incumbent Jefferson County Precinct One, Place One Justice of the peace Naomi Showers Doyle will retain her seat.
Doyle, a Democrat, beat Geroge Milhouse, Jr., who ran as an independent candidate.
She defeated Milhouse by winning 18,668 votes, or 73.11% of the votes in the general election. Milhouse received 6,867 votes or 26.89% of the vote.
Doyle told 12News during her campaign that many of the plans she had when she first ran for office had been fulfilled and that she planned to continue them on a larger scale after being re-elected.
She said the focus of her next term will be to expand programs that deter youth from committing the same crimes again.
"We did so with our judicial academy, which is an internship and mentorship program for our youth for 10-12th graders,” she explained at the time. “They get to come in, observe court. They get to shadow me, get to discuss the laws, do mock trials.”
Doyle also created an in-person and online resource center for those who represent themselves in court.
During the campaign her opponent claimed that Doyle had answered less call outs for death inquests than her fellow justices of the peace.
Doyle countered that one judge gets more call outs than others.
Showers Doyle says police contact judges to perform inquests and that one judge gets called more often.
"Whenever I receive a call from dispatch I answer the call," Doyle responded. "Those are the things that are verifiable when you pull the records from the dispatch.
