Dade Phelan and David Covey vying for votes at the polls as the race for Texas House Representative District 21 heats up

As both candidates continue to fight for your vote, both of them have the same message to their supporters. Get out and vote.

VIDOR, Texas — As the highly contested race House Representative District 21 continues to heat up, both candidates and their supporters were at different poling locations vying for votes.

12News caught up with Incumbent Dade Phelan, and supporters of David Covey out at the polls.

"It was a hard decision for me but I think I made the right one," said voter Sandy.

Sandy raced to the polls today to cast her vote early.

"They both are qualified, both great politicians, and I wish both of them the best," Sandy said.

While Sandy didn't tell 12News who she cast her vote for, some voters like Cherie Portie were less bashful.

Portie made it loud and clear that she was supporting David Covey.

"I want him to lock down our boarder, and keep the crisis at bay. What's been going on there, it's just absolutely ridiculous," said Portie.

Portie also says that she agrees with Covey's campaign priorities.

"I appreciate him wanting to keep our taxes down, I appreciate him wanting to get more Republican representation on committees," Portie told 12News.

David Covey was just down the road, campaigning at a polling location in Buna today.

Meanwhile, Incumbent Speaker Dade Phelan was at the Raymond Gould Center in Vidor greeting voters.

"Everyday that Southeast Texas does not have somebody at the table with the Lieutenant Governor, and a governor making deals that impact your daily lives," said Phelan.

Speaker Phelan says since becoming Speaker of the House, he's been committed to Southeast Texas.

"More transportation projects than anywhere else in the state of Texas is happening right here in southeast Texas. The first funding ever for our Southeast Texas ports $66 million, the first mental health and behavioral health hospital since 1966 as well," said Phelan.

If he loses Speaker of the House, Phelan said his constituents will notice a difference in their voice in Austin.

"This is a Leadership bonanza for Southeast Texas. We never had it before, and we may never see it again for maybe another 176 years. There is a misconception that if my opponent wins he becomes speaker of the house. No," said Phelan.

As both candidates continue to fight for your vote, both of them have the same message to their supporters. Get out and vote.
