PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Gregory Owens has been sentenced to life in prison for attempting to kill his wife.
Owens, who is from Londonderry, N.H., broke into the home of Steve and Carol Chabot in December of 2014, shooting both his wife Rachel and Steve Chabot.
It took just three hours for a jury to find Owens guilty of interstate domestic violence and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
Owens testified in his own defense during his trial and denied the accusations.
Both Rachel Ownes and Steve Chabot survived. Chabot's wife Carol escaped injury by hiding in another room.
Owens spoke at his sentencing on Tuesday. He continued to deny he had any part in the attack and said had he been the shooter, his wife and the homeowner would have been dead, referencing his training with the military.
Owens broke down at one point while addressing his wife Rachel, apologizing for one moment of abuse within their relationship.
Rachel Owens also spoke during Tuesday's sentencing hearing about her injuries, and said she feels like she's a burden.
"I got my sentence, and he got his," said Owens after the sentencing.
Their son Wayne also addressed the court, calling his father a "monster."
Outside of court, Wayne said he was both happy and sad for what his family has gone through.
"I think this has brought us together, unfortunately, it had to be under these circumstances that made us, I think, tighter as a family," Wayne Owens said to reporters after the sentencing. "I think we've come out stronger and we're going to continue to be there for each other and just move on and just close this chapter in our life. We're lucky to have her with us still."
