A Hardin County jury sentenced 27-year-old Cody Davis to 60 years in prison late Thursday afternoon.
Earlier Thursday, Davis was found guilty of murdering 26-year-old Owen Goodman, who died from multiple stab wounds at a Lumberton home last year.
When Davis was found guilty, his mother left the courtroom sobbing. Then when Davis was sentenced to 60 years, the victim's family left the courtroom in tears.
They wanted Davis to serve at least one year per each stab wound. There were 87 in total.
The most emotional part of the trial was during the victim impact statements, which were read after the sentencing verdict.
One of Goodman's brothers said "this senseless and vicious act took my baby brother."
But the victim's family said they accept the verdict.
"I feel justice was served," said one of Goodman's brothers. "I know my brother can't come back. I pray for Cody, that he finds peace. I hope he seeks salvation while he's in prison."
During these impact statements, Davis himself became emotional.
Earlier in the sentencing phase of his trial, he apologized for his actions.
"I just want to say to both families, I did not intend to kill Owen Goodman," said Cody Davis. "I am sorry for what happened."
Davis is eligible for parole after 30 years.
During the punishment phase of the trial, prosecutors asked the jury to consider sentencing Davis five to 99 years in prison or to give him life in prison.
Davis' defense said this was a crime of "sudden passion," but as shown by the verdict giving Davis prison time, the jury disagreed.
