BEAUMONT, Texas — A Vidor Police officer and a passenger escaped with minor injuries after a Vidor patrol unit was struck at an Interstate 10 accident scene late Monday night.
Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating the wrecks.
Initially, a commercial box truck carrying seafood was involved in a wreck along eastbound Interstate 10 just east of Vidor near mile marker 864 at about 10:30 p.m. The driver drove on to the right shoulder to avoid hitting another vehicle that made an unsafe lane change, according to a DPS news release.
The driver wasn't aware that the shoulder dropped off which made them lose control, causing the truck to overturn.
The driver of the truck, which flipped onto its side, is expected to be fine.
While the wreck was being cleaned up, a Dodge Charger struck a Vidor Police SUV that was parked in the eastbound lanes blocking traffic and helping to divert eastbound drivers onto the access road, according to an officer on the scene.
The Charger disregarded several other marked police cars before hitting the police SUV, according to DPS.
The Vidor officer and a passenger were taken by ambulance to a Southeast Texas hospital where they were both treated and released with minor injuries, according to Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll.
The driver of the Dodge Charger also only had minor injuries.
There is no word on if the driver of the Dodge charger was cited or not.
The driver of the box truck showed signs of intoxication and a blood sample was taken, according to DPS. They say criminal charges are likely.
As of Tuesday, 4:30 p.m. no charges have been filed.
Both wrecks resulted in the eastbound lanes of the interstate being shut down for several hours.
