Two men from Orange die in separate Southwest Louisiana wrecks on Monday

Both men died in separate wrecks about 10 miles apart in Starks, La.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Two men from Orange died in separate wrecks less than 12 hours apart in Starks, La. on Monday.

In the first wreck, Shawn D. Dreyer, 21, of Orange, died on the scene at about 3 a.m. Monday morning, according to a news release from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.

Dreyer was driving a truck north along Green Moore Rd. near Doyle Cemetery Road in Starks when it crossed the the center lines, ran off the road and struck a tree.

A passenger in the truck was flown by helicopter to a Southwest Louisiana Hospital with serious injuries, according to the release.

Deputies are continuing to investigate the wreck and say that speed appears to be a factor. It is not known if Dreyer or his passenger were wearing seatbelts the release said.

In the second wreck, about 10 hours later and about 10 miles away, Rick J. Hampton, 37, of Orange, died, just after 1 p.m., after being thrown from his motorcycle after failing to negotiate a curve along Green Island Rd in Starks. He was also pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck.

Deputies are still investigating but say speed appears to be a factor.

A state law-required toxicology test will be conducted in both wrecks, according to the release.
