'Help us help you' | Two Jasper County fire chiefs are asking voters to approve 2% sales tax to help them better serve the community

Fire Chiefs Mike Smith and Joe Morgan in ESD 3 say this slight increase in the sales tax would be enough to repair and replace outdated equipment.

JASPER COUNTY, Texas — Two Jasper County fire chiefs are asking voters to consider approving a proposed 2% sales tax increase that would give them an extra boost that will allow them to continue serving the needs of Jasper County.

Fire Chiefs Mike Smith and Joe Morgan in Emergency Service District (ESD) 3 say this slight increase in the sales tax would be enough to repair and replace outdated equipment and possibly provide a dedicated ambulance service for the district.

ESD 3 consists of Kirbyville, Roganville, and Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Departments.

Last week it was all hands on deck for volunteer firefighters with Jasper County ESD 3 as the storms flooded the area.

"I've got a high-water rescue truck sitting up in Kirbyville right now that's broke down from last week's flood waters," said Smith.

Smith is the Roganville Fire Chief. The truck Smith is referring to is one of the two vehicles currently out of commission.

A half empty bay serves as a reminder that ESD 3 resources are severely limited.

"We're not under contract with an ambulance company," Smith said.

Right now, ESD 3 are forced to rely on the ambulance services of ESD 4.

"There's been times where they were just running thin. We're working hard trying to eliminate that problem," Smith told 12News.

In September 2023 a Jasper County deputy was even forced to transport a car crash victim to the hospital in her own patrol unit.

Both Smith and Morgan agree that a 2% sales tax increase would be a small price to pay to save lives.

"This is not a property tax. This is strictly a sales tax on things that you buy from the stores and other places," Morgan said.

"A lot of people want to say 'I already pay money to the ESD on my property taxes and you do but it's 1%. Don't get me wrong, we appreciate that, but it doesn't go far," said Smith.

The two chiefs say they want their district to be up to par with districts 1 and 4, who already take in an 8.25% sales tax.

"Everyone seems to be doing well on 8 and a quarter in Buna and Jasper. If we could get it passed, it would be a great thing for us," said Morgan.

Both chiefs say they need the community's support now more than ever.

"We do what we can with what we have to work with. Help us help you," said Smith.

Early voting for the 2% sales tax increase starts on April 22. All residents in ESD 3, outside of Kirbyville can vote.
