LAKE CHARLES, La. — The tornado that moved from Westlake into Lake Charles, LA Monday afternoon has been rated an EF-1 by the National Weather Service (NWS).
A NWS team is in Sulphur, LA surveying the area, according to our media partners in Lake Charles, KPLC.
The tornado winds peaked at 100 mph, had a max width of 300 yards and traveled 6.5 miles. It began at 4:45 p.m. and ended at 4:53 p.m., according to NWS estimates.
Tornadoes with winds from 86 mph to 110 mph are classified EF-1.
“An EF-1 tornado touched down in Westlake, causing roof and exterior wall damage to several homes and businesses... The tornado crossed I-10 into downtown Lake Charles, where it caused additional roof damage to a business. Along the path, trees and power lines were also downed," said a NWS survey summary.
