BEAUMONT — In the last month Southeast Texas has seen 3 motorcycle fatalities, Jefferson Edwin West died north of Kirbyville, Cody Kendrick died on South Major Drive, and Layne Floria died early Sunday on I-10 in Orange County.
"It saddens my heart because now we've lost another one," says Steve Morgan.
Morgan has been a bike rider for over 3 decades, he loves it so much, he lives the lifestyle, working at Cowboy Harley in Beaumont.
"When we hear of an incident, we send out a roll call to see if it's anyone we know," Morgan says.
In the last month Morgan says three of those roll calls could have been made.
He says spring time can be the best time to ride, and with more bikers on the road, there are also more accidents
"A brother is a brother and a sister is a sister, so if they were on a motorcycle it affects us all terribly," he says.
The Texas Department of Transportation [ TxDOT ] says there were almost 500 fatal motorcycle crashes across the state.
For that same reason, TxDOT will be launching the "Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles" campaign.
Riders will tell you they feel most vulnerable when they are in a vehicle's blind spot.
For business owners like Jake Tortorice, It's a reminder to always be a safe driver.
"It's like every week we're losing someone on a motorcycle," he says.
"I think it's because we're not paying attention while driving, and probably texting," Tortorice explains.
Although the last few accidents were very tragic, Morgan says it's comforting to know they were doing what they loved best.
"They were doing something they would enjoy like bike riding," Morgan says.
Morgan tells us says he hopes not to ever do a biker roll call ever again.
