Three Big Thicket trails closed due to downed trees, washouts following Hurricane Beryl

Birdwatchers, Woodlands and Big Sandy Trails are currently closed, according to the national preserve.

KOUNTZE, Texas — Three Big Thicket trails are currently closed due to significant damage from fallen trees and washouts following Hurricane Beryl. 

The Big Thicket National Preserve announced that Birdwatchers, Woodlands and Big Sandy Trails are closed as crews work to clear downed trees and other potential hazards. 

Kirby, Sundew and other trails are available for visitors to hike on while staff continue to clean the damaged trails. 

Beryl made landfall near Matagorda, Texas as a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. The storm made landfall at 3:55 a.m., on July 8, according to the National Hurricane Center.
