Texas rejected thousands of personalized license plates in 2023. Here's what some said

Many of the rejected license plates aren't safe to share, but a few stood out.

AUSTIN, Texas — Since 1965, Texans have been able to request personalized license plates through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Texas laws and rules are pretty extensive for what patterns can lead to rejections that "may be considered objectionable or misleading."

Thousands of plates were denied or rejected by the DMV in 2023, with June having the highest number of rejected plates at 345.

KVUE obtained a list of all the rejections from January through November. Many of them aren't safe to share, but here are some that stood out:

  • "MOOV PLZ"
  • "SAVAGE1"
  • "NA U MAD"
  • "SLAAAAY"
  • "O U FNCY"
  • "HI HATER"
  • "SP3ED UP"
  • "RAAAGE"
  • "F3LONY"
  • "ICYUMAD"

In the past, the DMV has said staff members review the personalized plate applications daily. If a plate gets rejected, Texans can choose a new personalization, receive a refund or appeal the decision. Normally, application reviews are completed within five days.

In total, the DMV rejected more than 3,000 personalized license plate requests in 2023.
