BEAUMONT, Texas — The Texas Health and Human Services Commission released a statement on Tuesday in reference to a potential data breach that could affect 3,392 residents living in or close to the cities of Tyler, Texarkana, Longview, Marshall, Beaumont and Nacogdoches.
According to the release, it was discovered that a staff member emailed spreadsheets containing sensitive health and personal information to a personal email account between September and October of 2023.
The Health and Human Services Commission reported the incident to the Texas Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General for an investigation. HHSC stated that it is unknown if any information was disclosed or misused, but the information was acquired by an unintended recipient.
For individuals affected by the data breach, the Health and Human Services Commission is offering free credit monitoring for a year.
Individuals affected were notified by mail.
HHSC stated that staff members are required to take security and cybersecurity training annually and are taking the necessary steps to keep confidential information safe.
