Newton firefighters urge caution after Sunday afternoon winds whip small trash fire into 2 acre fire

NEWTON, Texas — High winds helped cause the spread of a trash fire Sunday afternoon in Newton County

Firefighters with the Newton Volunteer Fire Department were sent to the fire in the 9700 block of FM 2626 at ab out 4:40 p.m. Sunday according to the Newton VFD.

A small trash fire spread and burned about two acres before it was controlled and contained by about 6 p.m. according to the fire department.

One small structure burned and one was saved.

Firefighters from the Bon Weir Volunteer Fire Department answered a mutual aid call and responded to assist Newton firefighters with the fire according to the Newton VFD.

Residents are being encouraged to refrain from burning on high-wind, low humidity days according to the Newton fire department.
