Southeast Texas church will receive historical marker

The ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p.m. where the marker will be unveiled at the China Methodist Church.

CHINA, Texas — A hidden piece of Southeast Texas history is getting recognition. 

The China Methodist Church will receive a historical marker on Sunday, October 22, 2023, atv205 W Washington Avenue in China, to acknowledge it's longtime impact on the community. 

The Methodist Church as been working hard with the Jefferson County Historical Commission to make this happen. 

One of their knowledgeable members Peggy Granger has been the church's historian and life-long member. 

"When the original built in 1896, it was a shotgun little wooden building. That probably sat where the front porch is of the church is now until about 1899. The former sanctuary area was there and they both were faced East right beside it," she said. 

The ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p.m. where the marker will be unveiled.
