Silsbee Icehouse Museum program gives Hardin County students the opportunity to learn how to preserve history

SILSBEE, Texas — Hardin County students are learning all about what it takes to preserve history.

The Junior Historians program at Silsbee Icehouse Museum offers middle school through college students hands-on training, focused on curating.

"I did the junior historian program over the summer and I have been here ever since," 8th grader Grey Surratt said.

Putting on white gloves and handling museum artifacts are just some of the responsibilities expected of the junior historians.

Becoming mini-experts on the latest exhibits allows the kids to interact with museum goers.

"I really enjoy giving the tours and just looking at the museum and how history has changed from back then to now," 9th grader Joshua Kilcrease said.

The shared love of history helps bring students of all ages together.

"It gave me a really cool taste of what i want to do, and how i want to go about doing that. So, the jayhawker exhibit and the dog people. My research thesis is actually kind of similar to that and it was a lot of fun learning about that one," said college student, Elianna Auer.

Museum Curator Susan Kilcrease says this program is a great opportunity to provide education to the kids of Hardin County.

"Kids coming in and finding a new piece of information that they didn't know about. Telling their families and parents about it, and hopefully learning so much more, that's what makes it exciting. Getting to the kids early," she said.

If you or your child want to get involved, the Junior Historians program is accepting candidates or their summer program, free of charge.
