SILSBEE, Texas — The Silsbee Independent School District is cheering on a team of high school students who are preparing to compete in a world championship.
The Silsbee High School Robotics team, SHS GOLD!, is heading to the VEX Robotics World Championship in April to compete against teams from all over the globe, according to a Silsbee ISD release.
SHS GOLD! recently competed in a regional qualifier tournament at Clear Lake High School in Houston. It was there that the team "punched their ticket" to the championship.
The team won first and second place in class 4A at the UIL State Championship in February.
SHS GOLD! faced off against big city schools, private schools, and magnet schools for the gifted at the World Qualifiers. The team was the second smallest school in the competition and finished first and second in qualifying matches, according to the release.
The students won the Amaze Award and the Robot Skills award by setting a new regional record that was in the top 100 scores in the world. They also brought home the tournament's top honor, the Excellence Award, which goes to the team that is the best in every area of competition.
“Our goal for this season was just to get one robot to the world finals, but instead we are sending multiple machines and bringing home the tourney's top prizes," Vic Miller, robotics teacher said. "All of the team's hard work has paid off. Our prayers have all been answered, and I feel blessed."
The district is proud of the team of students. Officials said the students put in countless hours of hard work and were dedicated in reaching their goal.
