BEAUMONT, Texas — Officer Brooklin Moore had quite the first week on the job after rescuing a litter of puppies and their mom.
It didn't take long for the rookie Beaumont Animal Care Officer to earn her stipes after getting a call about a mother dog and her puppies living underneath a home.
"As soon as we pull up, she picks her head out of the corner of the door. And she got three babies, mom came to us and all the babies scattered, because they were scared," Moore told 12News.
After rescuing the mom and her three puppies, Moore and her training officer heard a puppy more stubborn than the others still underneath the house and went to work trying to free it.
"There was a little hole that led to underneath of the stairs. I know that this puppy is underneath this house, and I've got to get him out," said Moore.
With newfound determination Moore wasted no time wriggling her way into the cramped opening.
"The hole was very, super snug," said Moore. "I was trying to like get to him, it was very wet. It was very muddy, I squeezed myself through it, and I found him."
The rescue was just in time. According to Moore the puppy was the runt of the of the litter and looking weak by the time she was finally able to pull it out.
However, this story does have a happy ending. After spending some time at Beaumont Animal Care the puppy, now affectionately known as "Nibs", has shown improvement.
"We hear him barking and howling sometimes, and we're just happy he has the energy to. At first he couldn't even like hold his head up to eat," Moore said.
A puppy saved while braving wet and claustrophobic conditions, not bad for an officer with only a week on the job.
"You realize the good that you can do here. It can be very rewarding," said Moore.
