Coyote causes downed power lines and road closure on highway 62

Entergy confirmed the closure in the area will last several hours.

ORANGE, Texas — A coyote running onto highway causes chain reaction of wrecks and shut down of highway 62. 

Entergy has confirmed that the area will be closed for several hours. 

The Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers were sent to a crash on Highway 62 near Tulane Road that occurred around 4 a.m. on Sunday October 29, 2023. 

A 2012 Hyundai Tucson was traveling south, followed by a 2017 Ford F-250, while a 2016 Buick Lacrosse was traveling north.

The driver of the Hyundai took a sharp turn to the right and entered the west ditch to avoid striking a coyote that entered the roadway. 

The Hyundai then struck an electrical pole causing it to fall. 

When the electrical line fell, it struck the Ford, causing damage to its windshield. 

The Buick then struck the powerline as it was stretched across the road, causing damage to its front end. 

The driver of the Hyundai, identified as Gracie Peltier, 26-year-old of Orange, was not injured. 

The driver of the Ford, identified as Mark Stross, 67-year-old of Orange, was not injured.

The driver of the Buick and two passengers, were sent to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. 

The driver is identified as Stanley Perkins, 27-year-old of Beaumont.
