Texas Purple Hull Pea Festival being held on Saturday for 10th year

The festival will have multiple vendors like the pop-up from Kirbyville Farmers Market, a kid zone, carnival games, purple pea contests and a mini car show.

BURKEVILLE, Texas — The Shankleville Historical Society is hosting the Texas Purple Hull Pea Festival this Saturday for the 10th year.

The festival is a celebration of local history and is fun for the whole family.

The festival will have multiple vendors like the pop-up from Kirbyville Farmers Market, a kid zone, carnival games, purple pea contests and a mini car show.

There will also be historical walking tours that include a tour of the Addie & A.T. Odom Homestead, a National Historic Site being refurbished to its 1940 aesthetic, as well as tours of the local cemeteries.

There is also a tour of the spring, which is the location of the love story of Jim and Winnie Shankle, two enslaved people who were separated. The story goes that Jim swam the Mississippi River to be reunited with his love Winnie, at the spring.

The day ends with the highlight of the festival, the Matthew H. Clay, Jr. Memorial Concert featuring Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble,.

The Purple Hull Pea Festival will be this Saturday on June22 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Addie & A.T. Odom Homestead.

The festival is free and do not require tickets, but organizers ask that you do go online and register so they will have records.
