PORT ARTHUR — A Port Arthur elementary school looks as good as new nearly a year after it was flooded during Harvey.

Staff Sergeant Lucian Adams elementary will start class on Wednesday.

It was flooded with three to 12 inches of rain during Harvey but after being repaired for the past year it is remodeled.

There will be 540 students attending school this year which is an increase from 490 enrolled last year.

"I kind of look at this as the blessing in the storm because we have a brand new school basically," said teacher Jael Moody.

Moody said her home also was flooded during the storm and said she was shocked when she found out about the school.

“I was like oh no all my stuff but at the same time I had to prioritize so my home was what I was most worried about,” said Moody.

Moody was teaching third grade and had to move her class to a portable building at Dowling Elementary for the rest of the school year.

"A lot of my students lost their homes, one of my students was living in a hotel..but we became one big family and survived,” said Moody.

The school has a new cafeteria, gym, computers and classrooms.

Another teacher named Anita Conway said she spent most of the year getting her classroom ready.

She said she is excited for school to start on Wednesday.

"We are home, we are happy and we can't wait till Wednesday to get kids," said Conway.

The school was also given lots of donations from other schools across the country.
