Port Arthur residents waiting on power to be restored following Friday's storms

Rita Salinas has been without power since Friday, May 10. She said the best Mother's Day gift she could get would be having her electricity turned back on.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — More than 1500 people are working to restore power to the 55,000 Entergy customers that lost electricity during last week's storms according to Entergy's website.

7,300 customers remain without power on 4 p.m. Sunday, May 12, down from more than 55,000 at the peak of the storms early Friday morning, Entergy said in a news release. Additional storms hampered restoration and resulted in a few more outages on Saturday.

Rita Salinas lives on 29th Street in Port Arthur and has been without power since early Friday.

"You just feel helpless, that's all it is," Salinas said. "It's just frustrating that's all it is. My neighbors, their lights came on and to sit here with no lights and look over at there's with their light in the house, it's just frustrating. That's all I can say.

Entergy officials spent Mother's Day working to continue to restore the power to all of those affected communities.

"We understand it's hard," Vice President of Customer of Service of Entergy Texas Stuart Barrett said. "We understand that it is an inconvenience, we're working as hard as we can, but we have to put safety first and reliably serve the public."

Salinas says she expect her power to be on by Tuesday. Entergy has created a mobile command post in Port Arthur at Central Mall near the Sears entrance. Customers with any questions pertaining to power outages are encouraged to go out Monday, May 12, between 9 am and 3 pm.

"Everyone here is celebrating Mother's Day as well," Barrett said. "We are sacrificing just like they are without power and we appreciate their understanding of that."
