A Southeast Texas nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth mental health receives $5K from TEGNA Foundation

Whether its with art, numbers or crafts, children have a safe space at the Samaritan Counseling Center.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — 12News and our parent company, TEGNA Inc., are highlighting the work a Port Arthur nonprofit that is dedicated to supporting youth mental health.

TEGNA proudly gifted the Samaritan Counseling Center of Southeast Texas with a $5,000 check.

Whether its with art, numbers or crafts, children have a safe space at the Samaritan Counseling Center.

"As a center we really focus on making sure that our youth are aware of what we do here. The importance of their mental health. And that seeking services is something that is easy as a dental check up," said Executive Director Robin McCutcheon.

The center financially supports its clients who may not have health care or are underinsured, according to McCutcheon.

"We don't want someone to sit at home or wherever they are, need a service and not be able to have that," McCutcheon said.

Clients range from ages four to the people in their eighties.

"We raise funds so that anyone that calls has the ability to receive an appointment and have services without having to worry about the funds," said McCutcheon.

That's why 12News and the TEGNA Foundation had no problem giving back to the nonprofit.

"The more support we receive from the community means the more services we can provide back to the community, so we're so excited because it means those funds are going to provide more counseling services for Southeast Texans," said Community Engagement Coordinator Brooke Loupe.

Not only does the Samaritan Counseling Center offer counseling services, it also gives free mental health screenings to local high school students.

"And my absolute favorite part about that is getting to see new conversations and new sparks happen between parents and their kids," Loupe said.

Even the center's therapy dog, Foster,  plays a role in putting the mental health of Southeast Texas youth first.

"Just cause someone doesn't have funds in their pocket book, shouldn't be a barrier for them to seek services," said McCutcheon.

The center is having a fundraiser called The Not So Newlywed Game on February 1, 2024.
