PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Since the early 1990's, Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas has called Port Arthur home.
The organization started looking into other options in April, saying it was losing too much money in downtown Port Arthur after lower attendance this year.
The move has left Port Arthur city leaders deciding what to do next.
Students at Lamar State College-Port Arthur hope the city will hold some sort of festival.
"Definitely a lot more stuff for college students to do around here, maybe a music festival or something," said Kassandra Brown, a freshman at LSCPA.
Port Arthur Mayor Thurman Bartie tells 12News the city does plan to replace Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas.
"I can almost guarantee you by March or April that you can begin making your plans for what is going to occur in the later January or early February of 2021," said Mayor Bartie.
He could not comment on what exactly is going to take place.
Mayor Bartie said that he is working with an exploratory committee to come up with some sort of festival for 2021.

"Mardi Gras is a title that kind of is synonymous to Port Arthur. So we are at that junction right now to have us a Mardi Gras-type festival," said Bartie
He tells 12News a time frame for the city to host a Mardi Gras type festival in 2020 is too short.
For some college student like J'son Brooks, they hope the city will at least hold some type of festival.
"Anything to bring people out to see different cultures throughout the city. That's important," said Brooks.
The good times are set to roll in Beaumont for Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas on February 20, 2020.
