Port Arthur homeless shelter to re-open following Harvey

"God has told me no matter what, get this shelter back open," Hill said. Port Cities Rescue Mission Ministries has been closed due to a lack of funding.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A homeless shelter in Port Arthur is opening its doors back up for the first time since Harvey.

Port Cities Rescue Mission Ministries has been closed due to a lack of funding.

On Monday, the facility will once again be a resource for the homeless.

Yet, remaining open is going to to be the challenge, according to executive director Ken Hill.

"God has told me no matter what, get this shelter back open," Hill said. "Due to financial burdens and shortfalls, we've had to stop taking people since Harvey."

Despite not knowing how long his ministry will stay open, Hill says this place is vital for people living on the streets.

"If you help someone, they can change the dichotomy of their whole family," Hill said. "They're potential taxpayers, they're potential voters," Hill said. "All for these things come to play when you look at the full gamut of why we're doing this."

Once opened, Port Cities Rescue Mission Ministries will have two case workers volunteering their time to help out families.

Yet, Hill says support from the community will be the most important tool

"We're asking any entity that has a heart to help the homeless and support us in this endeavor," Hill said.

The ministry group originally opened in 1984 and has helped thousands of families from all over the country.

Hill tells 12News it's not recognition he seeks, but making a difference in the lives of others that gives him hope.

"We can't take credit for any of it, we believe that God's hand is on this. We're going to do it as long as we're able to," Hill said.

The facility has seven different buildings for different types of homeless families, but only one will open starting Monday.

It will be a three-story home that includes a kitchen and dining area.

Hill hopes to open more of the facility homes in the near future.
