Port Arthur fire chief Greg Benson has been fired

The city manager told Benson that he was unhappy with the direction that the department was going, but did not provide him with any feedback or specific issues.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Port Arthur Fire Chief Greg Benson has been fired by the city manager, he told 12News.

Benson tells 12News that City Manager Ron Burton fired him on Thursday. The change is to take place effective immediately.

Burton told Benson that he was unhappy with the direction that the department was going, but did not provide him with any feedback or specific issues within the last few months.

Benson has never been suspended during his time as chief, he told 12News.

Benson became fire chief in 2021.

He says he was given a severance package and he is not planning to take any legal action against the city.

He is going to do some reflection and research, he said.

The city has named Deputy Chief Robert Havens as interim.
