Port Arthur family is reunited with puppy after alleged dognapper returns it after seeing herself on video

Moonlight, a Shih Tzu, was taken on Friday and the theft was caught on camera.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A Port Arthur family's prayers have been answered a police officer reunited them with their stolen puppy.

Moonlight, a Shih Tzu, was taken on Friday and the theft was caught on camera.

Police say the woman returned the puppy when she saw the video footage on Port Arthur Police Department's Facebook.

Kevin Martin says he promised his 18-month-old granddaughter, A'miri he'd get her dog back to her. Moonlight was a present given to A'miri this past Christmas.

The family is ecstatic that her Shih Tzu puppy is back home.

"Thank you, to the lady that took her and you brought her back," said Martin.

In the video Moonlight is seen in the street as a black car drives by. A woman gets out the car then takes out a blanket and dog food. Moonlight disappears.

The woman even tried to dognap Moonlight's mom Lexi, but Lexi runs off.

"Lexi never was the most friendly dog. But she was a smart dog and so she's like no I'm not coming with you, even though you got my baby," Martin said.

Police say after the alleged dognapper saw herself on Facebook, she turned Moonlight in to Port Arthur police.

"A case that seemed small to someone else is huge to Kevin, and his grandbaby... In that interview you could see it was pulling at his heart. He was hurt. His family was hurt. When those detectives showed up with that dog we all celebrated," said PAPD Chief Tim Duriso.

Lexi struggled with Moonlight's disappearance.

"And this dog is depressed right now. And I'm trying to do everything I can to help her get through this, because she's hurting," Martin said.

A'miri was lost without her protector.

"If I'm out the room and she's crying, she'll start barking to let me know the baby crying get over here," said Martin.

Martin was glad he trusted Port Arthur police to find Moonlight.

"And I just know I got all five of my girls back. So I still got a job to do. I still gotta get Moonlight to understand you don't just go to everybody," Martin told 12News.

The family tells 12News that they are considering pressing charges. But in the meantime, Martin says he's feeding Moonlight Texas Roadhouse.
