Citing a lack of business, owners of a downtown Port Arthur distillery are closing their doors

The business was the first-ever distillery in the city of Port Arthur.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Nearly two years after opening for business a downtown Port Arthur distillery has announced it will be shutting its doors.

The Port Arthur location of Clifford Distilling, LLC. will be shutting down according to an announcement Monday afternoon on the distillery's Facebook page.

"It is with a sad heart that we will be closing the doors at the Port Arthur location for Clifford Distilling, LLC.," the post read.

The post cited a loss of money at its current location on Procter St as a reason for the closure.

The owners are planning on building a new location in what they say is expected to be a two-year project once they secure funding, according to the announcement.

"We have been working on funding to build a new distillery up on the I-10 corridor between Beaumont and Winnie," the post read.

A closeout sale is being held at the distillery from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26 & 27. They will be selling everything from their forklift to spirits.

When Sean and Wendy Clifford opened the distillery in April 2022 it was the first-ever distillery in the city. There are more than 130 distilleries across Texas.

The distillery offered three varieties of whiskey and two rums.

“I learned from my grandfather, and he learned from his grandfather's grandfather, so it's something in our family up in East Tennessee that we've always done,” Sean Clifford told 12News in 2022.
