Longtime Port Arthur community activist, Sandra Laday, dies at 72

Recently she was involved in working to convert Port Arthur's city animal shelter into a "no-kill" shelter.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A longtime Port Arthur community activist has died at 72.

Sandra Laday, 72, of Port Arthur, died on Wednesday, November 14, 2024, following a brief battle with COVID-19 and pneumonia, according to her family. 

Recently she was involved in working to convert Port Arthur's city animal shelter into a "no-kill" shelter after video was released of two kittens in poor condition at the shelter.

She founded the group People Supporting People more than 14 years ago giving away furniture, household items and children and adult's clothing to those in need according to the group's Facebook page. The group often focused residents at the OW Collins apartments complex.

Laday, who was born on September 2, 1952, is survived by husband of 53 years, Willie Laday, her daughter Mickey Guillory and her son-in-law Jefferson County Precinct Two Justice of the Peace Joseph Guillory II.

Laday's family has confirmed that funeral services will be held on November 23 at Rock Island Missionary Baptist Church.
