JASPER, Texas — A Jasper County police unit was struck while escorting a funeral procession.

The Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers are investigating a crash that happened around 3:23 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2023, on U.S. Highway 96, just south of Houston Street.

Texas DPS Sergeant Shana Clark says a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe Jasper police unit was traveling north with its emergency lights and sirens on while assisting with a funeral procession when a driver of a 2004 Chevrolet 2500 pulled from a parking lot in front of the police unit causing the vehicles to collided, in a news release.

After the collision, the patrol unit overturned in the southbound lane, she said.

The driver of the police unit, Robert Twine, 38, was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

However, Suzanna Richards, 76,  of Jasper, is the driver of the Chevrolet 2500 and was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

This is an ongoing investigation.
