VIDOR, Texas — Vidor Police are investigating the death of a 39-year-old bicyclist who was struck by a vehicle Tuesday night along the westbound Interstate 10 service road.
Caleb Smith, 39, of Vidor, was struck and killed while riding a bicycle around 9 p.m. along the westbound service road at Sherwood Street near the Maplecrest subdivision, according to Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll.
A 911 caller told police that a pickup had struck a bicyclist and when officers arrived they found bystanders starting CPR on Smith according to a news release from the Vidor Police Department.
Orange County Emergency Service District Number One firefighters and medics from Acadian Ambulance arrived and determined that Smith had died.
He was pronounced dead on the scene by Orange County Precinct Two Justice of the Peace Chad Jenkins.
Police say Smith was riding east near the center of the westbound service road when he was struck by a westbound pickup in the outside lane.
The area is poorly lit and Smith did not appear to have a light on his bicycle the release said.
The driver is cooperating with police in the investigation according to police.
