Orange renter asking apartment complex to fix the problems in her unit

Petesy Adams is now asking for a permanent solution from Velma Jeter Manor apartments, where she's been living for 11 years.

ORANGE, Texas — A woman living in Orange is fed up with her apartment complex after dealing with a leaky ceiling, moisture bubbles and black rings along the walls of her unit.

Petesy Adams is now asking for a permanent solution from Velma Jeter Manor apartments, where she's been living for 11 years.

Adams tells 12News ever since the property has been under a new company called ITEX Property Management they have been slow to get to the root of the problem.

"The whole floor is still full of water... The whole thing is like it's gone end up falling in," Adams said.

Walking into Adams' apartment you can see the upstairs bathroom leaking water into the laundry room below it, moisture bubbles and black rings along the walls.

"See it's still got toilet water on top of my dryer right there," she said. "I've been going to the office about my wall up there. It has mold circles like all the way coming around. The whole wall is like that."

12News spoke to property manager, Kaitlyn Fuentes, who declined to speak on the record, but is aware of the problems. So we reached out to ITEX, who sent a statement.

"Upon receiving the complaint, we engaged Service Master to investigate. While no mold was found, moisture from a leak was detected. Consequently, we arranged for plumbers to fix the leak and for Service Master to place fans to address the moisture. There are visible signs of water intrusion, and we are taking steps to address the underlying issues. We will continue to work with Service Master to monitor and resolve these concerns. Additionally, concerns may have been raised regarding a backed-up toilet. Our plumbers discovered non-standard waste materials on several separate occasions causing issues in the unit, and the resident's limiting entry to some of our providers for necessary follow-up services has prolonged some of the repair time. While some of the work requires apartment entry, we try to respect residents' wishes and work with them at suitable times. We remain committed to resolving this for the resident and are actively working on it."

Adams is the mother of an 8 and 10-year-old sons, she also cares for her friend's 13-month-old baby. She tells 12News she's afraid the apartment is unsafe for her and the children.

"I'm only worried about my kids. I want to get out of here and them give us really they could've just moved us out of here and gave us another apartment," Adams said.

ITEX tells 12News they will continue to monitor the unit to address Adams' concerns.
