Firefighters responded to a report that a person had been injured when a crane fell at 5121 S 1st Ave in Sabine Pass 1:45 p.m. Monday, according to Battalion Chief Mike Free with the Port Arthur Fire Department.
The crane was unloading anchors and anchor chain from an off-shore supply boat when it collapsed. The crane fell completely over, partially landing on the boat.
No one was hurt on the boat, but the crane operator suffered possible back injuries and was transported in unknown condition to an area hospital.
Adrian Lara who works next to where the crane collapsed, says he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"I was in shock," said Lara, an electrician on Atlantic 7, a nearby rig. "I was looking at it like 'no, this thing ain't coming down', so I kept staring at it and sure enough it looked like it was coming down in slow motion."
Around 5 gallons of oil was spilled when the crane collapsed. A boom was brought out ot cleanup the spill. Two more cranes are arriving Tuesday to begin the rest of the cleanup.
