JASPER, Texas — A 79-year-old Newton County man is charged in the death of an 80-year-old man who was hit by a car in front of the Jasper Walmart over the weekend.
Charles Erderly is charged with criminally negligent homicide in the death of Frank Wegner, of Brookeland.
Wegner died Sunday afternoon after being hit by a car driven by Erderly, according to Jasper Police. Police are waiting for the results of a blood test taken after the incident.
Erderly was released on a $7,500 bond.
The Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department responded to a request for medical assistance from the Jasper Texas Volunteer Fire Department and Allegiance Mobile Health - Jasper EMS shortly after 12:30 p.m., Sunday.
Wegner was hit in the Walmart parking lot, at the crosswalk near one of the entrances. He was trapped underneath a vehicle, according to the Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department.
At this time, it is unclear what led to the deadly accident. The Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department responded with an engine and seven firefighters.
Sally Wegner, Frank’s Wegner wife, said she and her husband were coming up on their 50-year wedding anniversary. Sally Wegner said her husband was a father and a grandfather.
Sally Wegner said the couple were going grocery shopping when the deadly incident occurred.
"Prayers for all involved," the Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department said in a Sunday Facebook post.

At 12:31pm BGVFD was dispatched to a request for medical assistance from the Jasper Texas Volunteer Fire Department and Allegiance Mobile Health - Jasper EMS with an auto/pedestrian accident in front of the Walmart store in the City of Jasper.
Arriving units rendered medical assistance however the patient did not survive.
