BEAUMONT, Texas — Firefighters from four Newton County volunteer fire departments battled a large fire at an empty home early Friday morning.

Firefighters from the Newton Volunteer Fire Department were sent to the fire at about 4 a.m. in the 2600 block of North Highway 87 and found a mobile home, a large shed and a smaller shed ablaze according to assistant Chief Karen Landrum.

Firefighters from Bon Weir, Burkeville and Trout Creek responded and helped fight the fire which destroyed the home and both sheds.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but because the home was unoccupied and the electricity was off firefighters suspect arson.

Firefighters ask that anyone with information about the fire call Newton Fire Chief Herb Kelley.

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
