DEWEYVILLE, Texas — Newton County Precinct 4 Constables Office is attending a two day exercise in order to stay prepared for the unthinkable.

On Saturday and Sunday morning Newton County Precinct 4 Constables Office will be packed into the hallways of Deweyville High School as a part of Active Shooter ALERRT training.

According to Constable Howard Wonders the training will consist of one full day of work in the classroom (Saturday) and then one day of scenario training throughout the school itself (Sunday).

Constable Wonders as well as all Newton County Precinct 4 will be in attendance for both days.

Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT), was created in 2002 as a partnership between Texas State University, the San Marcos, Texas Police Department and the Hays County, Texas Sheriff’s Office to address the need for active shooter response training for first responders. In 2013, ALERRT at Texas State was named the National Standard in Active Shooter Response Training by the FBI, according to their website.

Since 2002 ALERRT has helped train more than 303,928 state, local, and tribal first responders (over 246,129 law enforcement), at no cost to first responders or agencies.

With these tools law enforcement continues to evolve in order to combat an ongoing threat that has swept the nation at an alarming pace, with more school shootings in 2022 (46) than any year since Columbine according to Sandy Hook Promise.
