Nederland High School hosts open house to let community get a look at new building

Students and staff have a lot to look forward to like, bigger classrooms and a giant gym are a few of the perks at the new high school.

NEDERLAND, Texas — The Nederland Independent School District hosted an open house on Wednesday for the community to check out the brand new completed high school.

12News was there as hundreds of people flooded the facility to see what the hype was about. They were welcomed by the Nederland High School jazz band and food!

Students and staff have a lot to look forward to like, bigger classrooms and a giant gym are a few of the perks at the new high school.

Nederland Superintendent Dr. Stuart Kieschnick says the facility gives students the best tools for success.

"Tonight's our open house to allow the community in and see the building that they paid for!" said Dr. Kieschnick.

The band was there to set the mood as parents and students filled the halls of the new Nederland High School.

"So far we have a great turnout, I hope people get to see the whole building and just take their time and take it all in," Dr. Kieschnick said.

Parents and alumni were able to see the CTE classrooms, a double-sided gym and the state-of-the-art culinary department. Culinary instructor and chef, Chuck Harris says it's jam packed with appliances you usually see in a full-service restaurant.

"Six stations, a demo kitchen, a baking section, walk-in coolers and freezers eight years ago when I got here we had eight culinary students and now we have over a hundred and thirty," Harris said.

Harris says the added space and new tech in every classroom gives students the hands-on training they need to succeed after school.

"They're just overwhelmed by how nice it is! I'm really excited about it, there's still a lot of room to grow," said Harris.

The facility was paid for by a $156 million bond that voters passed in 2019.

"We're going to try and get a little better every day and we know that "good's not good enough!'," Dr. Kieschnick said.

Dr. Kieschnick says the new school is a win for the bulldog community.

"I cannot explain how proud I am of this building and the people in it and the work they do every day," he said.

The bond also paid for improvements to Bulldog Stadium and other updates district wide.
